Descriptions of Volunteer Opportunities
**Please reach out to swopepfa@gmail.com if you would be interested in any of these opportunities**
– Enrichment Parent: Enrichment is the class that your child will attend daily. It is the class that attaches them to an academic team. As an Enrichment Parent, you would help the teacher contact other parents that have the same Enrichment teacher when an activity was taking place. This volunteer opportunity mainly consists of making phone calls a couple times a year.
– Panther Prowl: Our main fundraiser of the year. Plan and organize the event, solicit corporate sponsors, donations, order t-shirts and sunglasses, organize volunteers for the day of the event, set-up, clean up. This is a one-time event that already happened this year, but you can start thinking about next year!
– 8th Grade Party: Help Mrs. Callahan organize and create an end of year party for the 8th graders. Some ideas from the past – Idlewild Park Pool, skate park, fields, DJ, dancing, catered BBQ lunch, scavenger hunts, etc. This is a one-time event at the end of the year.
– 7th Grade Field Day: Help Mrs. Malcolm with manning stations at Field Day. You’ll be impressed! This is a one-time event at the end of the year.
– Tutoring: Swope is always in need of tutors. We have a tutoring program on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 2:00-4:00PM in the Library. Tutoring is mainly focused on Language Arts and Mathematics, however, students will need help, on occasion with Social Studies and Science.
– Library Aide/Copy Help: Helping check in and out materials, copying, filing, helping students find materials, etc. Time commitment: ongoing and flexible.
– Lunchtime Help: Help to supervise the students during lunch. It’s a great opportunity for some fresh air during the day and to connect with middle schoolers. Time commitment: ongoing and flexible.
– PAC (Parent Advisory Committee): This is a committee that meets with Dr. Brown monthly and discusses parent concerns and perspectives on the academic environment of Swope Middle School.
– WatchDOGS: DOGS is an acronym for Dads of Great Students. This is a volunteer opportunity for dads, step-dads, grandpas, etc. to spend a day as a volunteer and role model for our Swope students. We will put you to work, but you’ll have fun doing it. Time commitment: ongoing and flexible.
– Track Help: Middle School Track season begins in the middle of April and runs through the middle of May. There are usually 4 multi-school meets. Even if you are not familiar with track events, we can use your help. We need timers, spotters, and people to direct students, and supervision in general.
– Social Events: Help Mrs. Callahan plan and organize various social events throughout the year, coordinate volunteers and donations for snacks, etc. Time commitment: wide ranging.
– Directory: This is a new endeavor this year! We will need people to help input the student list and contact information, coordinate printing, etc. Time commitment: one-time at the beginning of the year.
– Valentine’s Grams: Help Mrs. Callahan organize this very small fundraiser and fun activity for the kids. Time commitment: one-time event in February, very short time commitment.
– Veteran’s Day snacks: Help coordinate snacks to support Swope’s annual Veteran’s Day Assembly. Time commitment: one-time event around Veteran’s Day.
