All PFA Members are encouraged to volunteer for various school events throughout the year. To volunteer, you will first need to fill out and submit the Washoe County School District Volunteer Form and a copy of your driver’s license to the front office at Swope. Volunteer Forms are available in the front office at Swope. If you are registered as PFA member, you will receive email notifications about upcoming volunteer opportunities. The link to sign-up for the event will be included in the email.
Descriptions of Volunteer Opportunities
– Panther Prowl/Fun Run: Our main fundraiser of the year. Help the PFA plan and organize the event, solicit corporate sponsors, donations, order t-shirts and sunglasses, organize volunteers for the day of the event, set-up, clean up. This is a one-time event that happens in October every year. It requires a lot of parent involvement to pull off!
– Boo Grams: Help Mrs. Matilainen support the students during lunch with this very small fundraiser and fun activity where the leadership kids sell boo grams for Halloween. Time commitment: 1 hour, one-time event in February
– Self Manager Events: Help PFA plan and organize various events that offer a reward for those students who become self managers each quarter. Help coordinate volunteers, donations, food, drinks etc. Examples: Hot cocoa and cookie party, slushie truck, donut party. Time commitment: wide ranging, 1 self manager event each quarter,
– Veteran’s Day: Help coordinate snacks or volunteer time for setup to support Swope’s annual Veteran’s Day Assembly. Time commitment: one-time event around Veteran’s Day.
– Teacher Coffee Day: Help PFA deliver coffee to every staff member on campus. We have a coffee truck park in front of the school and fill the teachers coffee orders, then the volunteers get to deliver a fun drink to every teacher. Time commitment: 1 hour, usually morning time, 2-3x times per year
– Dance Events: Help PFA plan and organize various social events throughout the year, including 2 dances, help coordinate volunteers, donations, decorations, photobooths, activities, etc. Time commitment: wide ranging, dances are in December & March
– Valentine’s Grams: Help Mrs. Matilainen support the students during lunch with this very small fundraiser and fun activity where the leadership kids sell val grams for Valentines Day. Time commitment: 1 hour, one-time event in February
– Staff /Teacher Appreciation Week: Coordinate different activities/food for the staff to show them how much they are appreciated. Time commitment: May 4th- 9th
– 8th Grade Party: Help Mr. Gilbert & the PFA organize and create an end of year party for the 8th graders. Some ideas from the past – Donner Lake, Idlewild Park Pool, skate park, fields, DJ, dancing, catered BBQ lunch, scavenger hunts, etc. This is a one-time event at the end of the year. We do this planning during PFA Meetings.
– 6 & 7th Grade Field Day: Help with manning stations at Field Day. Options usually include, tug a war, gaga ball, parachute, volleyball, 9 square, spikeball etc. This is the end of year fun day for the 6 & 7th graders and happens the week before school gets out.
– Donations: If you would be interested in donating a service or product from your business for the Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) raffles, teacher appreciation, classroom materials, etc. this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Cash and gift cards are also welcomed anytime.
